ONE TREE PLANTED

WHO THEY ARE

One Tree Planted, a 501(c)(3) based in Shelburne, Vermont, has been funding reforestation in North and South America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific for over six years. Their:

  • Mission:  To make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees.

  • Purpose:  To give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity, and help reforestation efforts around the world.

  • Approach:  To work with and fund carefully-vetted reforestation project partners.  Funds donated through Cool Climate Funders to One Tree Planted can be designated by the donor to go toward projects to restore tropical forests, i.e., projects in South America, Asia or Africa.

  • Achievements:  Doubling or almost tripling the number of trees planted year over year, planting over 10 million trees in 2020, and already obtaining commitments to plant over 15 million in 2021.

WHAT THEY DO

  • One Tree Planted partners with carefully-selected reforestation organizations to carry out reforestation projects.

  • They vet reforestation partners to ensure an 80-90% tree survival rate.

  • They pool donations for each project and send the funds to the reforestation partner(s).

  • Their partners choose the best tree species to plant and work with local communities to grow saplings, plant them under optimal survival conditions and maintain and monitor reforested areas.

  • Costs vary by region and partner but average $1 for one tree. At least 80% goes towards the mission of growing, planting and maintaining the trees.

HOW THEY ENSURE AND MONITOR SUCCESS

  • The reforestation projects include improved forest management practices and agricultural techniques like agroforestry that benefit local communities and help ensure trees maintenance and survival.

  • After planting, reforestation partners provide information about the project and its impacts.

  • Based on that information, One Tree Planted publishes a report highlighting the impact of the trees, including photos and details such as the species planted, expected survival rates, community engagement and ecological benefits.
